Review: Wolfgang Gartner @ Beta Nightclub

Thursday September 15th turned out to be a big night for Denver partygoers as our generations’ own musical genius by the name of Wolfgang came to town. In less than three years the producer and DJ known as Wolfgang Gartner has gone from strength to strength, with eight #1 tracks on Beatport (including the site’s best-selling track of 2009) and remixes for A-list artists from all popular genres, he has been lauded by peers such as David Guetta, Tïesto, and Pete Tong.

On Thursday night Wolfgangs popularity was on full display as Beta Nightclub was absolutely rammed from the get go.  Every bottle service table full, the dancefloor crowd was overflowing into the bar area at the back of the club, and if you happened to be outside you were likely stuck there because there simply an all out traffic jam at the door to get in.  The next day I spoke with a contact at Beta and asked if the unusually large crowd had anything to do with school being back in session and he replied “No, Wolfgang is just a boss!”, and I couldn’t agree more.

Trajikk was the only opener that managed to catch as I was busy waiting for my brother and crew outside but he absolutely set the room on fire leading up to Wolfgang.  He kept the intensity high with some pounding tech-house and electro-dubstep style beats that at one point fooled me into thinking Wolfgang had already taken to the decks.  With each track from the likes of SHM and Benny Benassi he kept building the energy in the room until the crowd could not take it anymore and they burst out into chants of “Wolfgang! Wolfgang! Wolfgang!”

Finally Wolfgang took to the decks and I could feel the atmosphere in the room change all the way from our table in the very back of the club.  He wasted no time in picking up where Trajikk had left off and he proceeded to take us on a full throttle journey through all of his legendary material, dropping mixes of tracks from all genres with his own patented tech-house and electro flair thrown into the mix.  Just when you thought what was coming next he would spin 180 degrees and blow your mind.  One of my personal favs was his Bob Marley – Sun is Shining remix that I first heard from him when he opened up at EDC Las Vegas.  I don’t know how he did it or why it works so well, but he manages to maintain that timeless chill and laidback Marley vibe, in-between setting the dancefloor ablaze with some insane techy-electro basslines.

Apart from his straight mixes, Wolfgang also gave us all a heavy dose of his unmistakable productions both old and new like Illmerica, Space Junk, Wolfgangs 5th, Menage A Trois, Animal Rights and Undertaker. Although I really do appreciate is remixes and 100% recognize the skills necessary to make them happen, I would take his productions each and every time if given a choice.  When he cut these monsters loose the slam packed dance floor went truly bananas and so did I while I dangled over the VIP railing for a better look.  His sounds are so raw and visceral that you cant help but hoot and holler while flailing about like an idiot.

My only issue with the whole night is that the maestro played for less than an hour and a half.  He cam on right at 12:30 and then promptly ended the set at 1:50.  Now I rarely complain about shows but one thing that really busts my nuts is when sets are cut short, especially when you have a roomful of people chanting your name and begging for an encore.  Is 2hrs really that much to ask for?  I don’t know who made the call, but I urge whoever it was to let things play on in the future and give your paying patrons what they paid for.

Apart from that it was a great night spent with good friends and family and I would like to thank everyone at Beta who helped make it happen!
