On October 6th the lineup of heavy hitters at Beta continued as Hardwell brought his talents into town. Just 23yrs old he is without question one of the leaders of a younger generation of DJs that are taking the world by storm. With a sound and style all his own he wonderfully melds together the worlds of big room and dirty dutch house with a touch of tech trance to round it all out. This imalgamation of sounds allows Hardwell to appeal to fans of all genres and has opened the door for him to remix and produce with some of the biggest names in the world like Tiesto, Chuckie, Laidback Luke, Fedde Le Grande, Armin and the list goes on…
This meteoric rise to stardom has led Hardwell to play an incredibly hectic schedule over the past year where he shook massives like EDC Las Vegas, Sensation Prague & Creamfields as well as a number regular appearance at Amnesia and Privilege in Ibiza. Now fresh off rocking cities across the US on Tiesto’s college invasion tour we were lucky enough to catch this shooting star for a night right here in Denver, CO.
As I made my way into Beta I was very excited to finally see what he brings to the table in a live scenario. Back in June I had to make a tough decision at EDC to skip his set and I was very happy to have the opportunity to make up for the missed chance.
He started the night off strong with his recently released track ‘Encoded’ and left no doubt in anyone’s mind that he was going to BRING IT. He follwed that up with ‘Tiesto & Mark Knight – Beautiful World (Laidback Luke remix)’ and then his own mashup ‘Pendulum vs. Alex Kunnari & Tom Fall – Lost The Island’. Every track he played shook the room to its foundation with his perfect brand of dirty dutch house. His technical skills allow him to bang it hard without losing the melodies and the musical elements that make the music great in the first place (something I think Chuckie and Afrojack should try sometime).
As the night continued he played a very even mix of his own productions alongside his cheeky remixes and edits of some of the biggest songs of the summer. As I said earlier he brought it 100% and every time you expected a drop off in energy he slapped you across the face with another heater and the crowd went crazy. Typically I would provide a list of the tracks that received the biggest response from the crowd but on this night he simply carpet bombed the joint and did not leave you a single second to avoid the destruction.
My favorites deep impacts were ‘Zero 76’, ‘Future Folk’, ‘Epic the way you kiss me (hardwell mashup)’, ‘Sending My Love by R3hab & Swanky Tunes’ and lastly on the funkiest tunes of the night ‘Rattle by Bingo Players’. I really enjoy hearing big tunes that have somehow eluded my ears and he definitely hit me with a long list of secret destroyers.
I don’t know what else to say about the night other than it was ‘massive’ – actually it was ‘unusually massive’ and could be one of my favorite sets of the summer simply based on uniqueness and destruction value. Beta seems to have me making comments like this regularly, but I guess it is to be expected with such a ridiculous stream of talent coming through on a weekly basis. If you have been on the fence about seeing this bonafied star then I hope this review has changed your mind, and if not have a listen to the partial set recording (available below) and then it will be. The guy has all of his bases covered and is sure to be shaking dancefloors across the world for years to come.
