For the past 11 years, The Shakedown, hosted by DJ’s Rob Paine and Willyum, has been one of the main arteries feeding the Philly underground techno and deep house scene. These legendary parties have featured some of the most important DJ’s and Producers responsible for influencing every corner of what we now call “EDM” here in the US. The list of influential jocks would probably take up this whole page, but Josh Wink, Mark Farina, King Britt, Rob Paine, and Willyum, are some of the key players on this inventory of techno royalty. These parties have been held in some of the rawest spaces around Philadelphia, but could not be filled with more love. When you go to The Shakedown, the vibe just isn’t a party, but a family that is unrelated yet threaded together by one deep groove.
Not only is this event being housed in a historical venue, the lineup is one to be commended. Mark Farina will be starting things up with one of his mind altering Mushroom Jazz sets at 9pm. If you are unfamiliar with this sort of music, according to Farina’s SoundCloud, Mushroom Jazz is a down-tempo style infused with acid jazz and metropolitan style beats. This fusion became so popular in Farina’s home base of San Francisco, that he held a weekly residency to cook up these sets for what became a cult-like following. Unfortunately the club ended up closing, but that didn’t stop Mark from continuing to infect his listeners with his jazzy fungus by releasing a series of mix compilations appropriately titled, “Mushroom Jazz”.
Following Mark Farina is a man that needs very little introduction, Doc Martin. Doc Martin is the epitome of the DJ’s DJ, who schools the crowd on how to mix everything from deep house all the way to those sticky, funky tribal drums. Martin also gives his crowd extra homework by throwing in infectious deep classics glued together with acid-house. Last but not least, headlining the balcony will be Rob Paine and Willyum, supported by DJ Carl Michaels and DJ Dennis. Solomonic & 340 Sounds will provide sound reinforcement with visual stimulation by Anthrum.
If you find yourself in the Philadelphia area on Saturday, March 9th, this is something we highly recommend you explore. It is most certainly not the experience you will find at any other club or venue you otherwise may enter.
