Miami, New York, Montreal, and even Boston are a few of the most predominant cities in North America for electronic music. I’ve been to them all, and they’ve only progressed my love affair with the EDM scene. But I felt like a city was missing. I had been reading so many great things about the DC club-scape and it felt only natural to designate at least one night of my weekend trip to some seriously good music.
It was a tough choice between ATB and Carl Cox. I had seen ATB at Electric Zoo 2010 and 2011, and his most recent performance really knocked my socks off with some hard hitting trance. However, I had never seen the 49 year old legend Mr. Cox, and so, Fur it was! The venue was set up perfectly. Besides the main room, there were two alternate rooms that were playing Top 40-type stuff, which helped to get the dancing feet warmed up. By my 11:30 arrival, the main room was already pretty packed. The opening DJ was spinning solid house tunes that didn’t quite amount to Carl’s style, but basically gave Cox a volley for the spike. Carl came on at about 12:30 and let everyone know he was in the house with his classic ‘O Yes, O Yes’.
The best thing about Carl Cox is that a lot of the tunes he chooses from his music library are relatively underground, and since he doesn’t have a public podcast, it’s hard to predict his sets. This is something that I love because his drops are exceptionally surprising and you never really know what he’s going to play next. It was mostly tech-house that made you feel obliged to shake your booty. His fists were pumping the entire night and every time a transition occurred you saw his wrists turn the nobs on his decks. He is one of the most hands-on DJs I have ever seen. He closed the night with a couple drum-and-bass tracks, including a remix of ‘Show Me Love’. The room was packed and fans wrapped around the stage jumping up and down screaming at the tops of their lungs. And of course, I threw down some pretty wild dance moves myself, which I’d like to think inspired most of the people around me to do the same.
We would like to thank Club Glow and Fur for all of the hard work they put in showcasing such great DJs week in and week out. I hope that the next time one of the SBB crew members are DC-bound, we can hit it again. Cheers to all and thank you to my good friend Monika who is featured in this pic…we went to UVM together and have been fellow club-goers since Bal en Blanc 15! And a very special thanks to my girlfriend, Jacquelyn, who came out with me even though she doesn’t love the music as much as I do.
